Martini vs Basket Setting: Which Diamond Stud Setting Is Right for You?

When you shop for diamond stud earrings, the diamond gets all the attention — carat, color, clarity. But the setting decides how the diamond sits on your ear, how much light reaches it, and how it feels at the end of a long day. These are the two settings we handset most often in our NYC studio, and the honest differences between them.

The martini setting

Named for its cone shape — like a martini glass — this setting holds the diamond in three or four prongs that taper to a single point at the post. Because the cone is narrow, the diamond sits low and close to the earlobe.

Why people choose it:

  • Sits closest to the ear, so studs don't droop forward — a common complaint with heavier diamonds
  • Minimal metal means maximum visible diamond from every angle
  • The low profile reads elegant and secure, especially at 2 carats and up

Trade-off: on very large stones, the low profile means the diamond can sit snug against the lobe — some wearers prefer a little more lift.

The basket setting

The basket holds the diamond in four prongs connected by a small horizontal band, forming — as the name says — a basket. The diamond sits slightly higher off the ear than in a martini.

Why people choose it:

  • The classic, traditional stud look
  • Slightly more lift and presence off the ear
  • Even weight distribution; a secure choice for everyday wear

Trade-off: a touch more metal is visible from the side, and larger stones can tilt forward slightly more than in a martini cone.

Push back vs screw back

Whichever setting you choose, you'll also choose a closure:

  • Push backs slide onto a notched post. Quick on and off, and the standard for lighter pairs.
  • Screw backs thread onto a spiraled post. They take a few seconds longer to put on — and that's the point. For 2+ carat studs, we recommend screw backs: they can't be knocked loose, which matters when each earring is a significant diamond.

Our short answer

If you want the diamond as close to the ear as possible with the least metal showing, choose a martini. If you want the traditional stud silhouette with a bit more lift, choose a basket. At 2 carats and above, take the screw backs either way.
